Accessibility and inclusion considerations in the new semester

As the new semester begins on our changed campus, we must all have consideration for one another. As just one example, face masks are a requirement on campus, and this can pose a challenge to the deaf and hard of hearing who rely on lip reading to understand a speaker. Face masks with clear shields that make the mouth visible can address this particular example.

For your UMaine website, maintaining your content with web accessibility in mind will ensure everyone has sufficient access to your materials, whether remote access is required or encouraged. Refer to our past Web Accessibility and Inclusion articles for guidance.

UMaine’s Student Accessibility Services has a page available for resources related to COVID-19, and we encourage you to familiarize yourself with what they offer.

If you have any questions about web accessibility, or want to see us cover an accessibility topic in a future newsletter, please get in touch with us at um.weboffice@maine.edu.
